We all need to eat and many people love the convenience of having food delivery to their home. In fact, according to statistics, consumer spending on food delivery is approximately $30 billion.
This creates fantastic opportunities for those who want a side gig delivering food to make some extra cash. One of the leading food delivery platforms is DoorDash. In this DoorDash review, I’ll delve into this platform to find out if it is worth your time.
What is DoorDash?
DoorDash is a food delivery platform, allowing customers to order from local restaurants and a few grocery stores. When a customer places an order, a local DoorDash driver receives an alert to pick it up and deliver it to the customer’s home.
The service is available in over 850 cities throughout North America.
The company has two apps for Android and iOS. There is an app for customers and an app for drivers or “dashers”. The apps are free to download and there are no fees for creating an account.
How to Make Money with DoorDash?
DoorDash offers great flexibility. You can schedule shifts in advance or click “Dash Now” to start making money immediately. The Dash Now feature will only be highlighted as available if there are more than enough deliveries to ensure the pre scheduled Dashers are kept busy.
This scheduling feature is quite unique. You can schedule time blocks up to 7 days in advance or as soon as the day of.
Step 1: Accept an Order
You’ll get a notification of your customer order
Step 2: Go to the Restaurant
You can tap navigate to get directions to the restaurant. Be sure to check if there are specific pickup instructions.
Step 3: Collect the Order
Swipe right to confirm arrival. For most orders you can grab and go, but others require swiping your red card. Check off the items on the app and swipe to confirm it is correct.
Step 4: Go to the Delivery Address
You can use the navigate feature to get a map to the customer’s address. Swipe when you arrive.
Step 5: Confirm Delivery
Once the customer accepts the order, confirm delivery and you’re set for another order.
How Much do DoorDash Drivers Make?
DoorDash claims you can earn $15 to $25 per hour. As a newbie, you may earn less than this at approximately $10 per hour.
As a Dasher, you can keep 100% of the delivery fee, customer tips and any boosts. DoorDash makes its money by charging a percentage of each order to the restaurant.
How Does DoorDash Pay?
After you complete a delivery, the DoorDash app will display a quick earnings summary. When you click “Got it”, you’re set to end your dash or accept another order.
DoorDash pays its dashers via bank account direct deposit on a weekly basis. This means the company processes payments on Monday for the work you did the previous Monday to Sunday. Your earnings up to midnight PST on Sunday will be included in this payment.
Be aware that depending on your bank, it may take a couple of days for your deposit to show in your account.
How to Sign Up for a DoorDash Job?
You’ll see a prompt to enter your details to create your account. This includes your zip code, phone number, and name. You will also need to create a password and consent to a background check.
- The background check requires your vehicle details.
- You will also need to check the box that states you have car insurance coverage.
- After clicking “continue”, you will need to enter your social security number, birthday and driver’s license number.
- The platform also allows you to request a free copy of the background check sent to your email.
After passing the background check, DoorDash will send you a free activation kit. This includes a manual, “hot bag” and a RedCard. This is a company credit card that you’ll need to activate before you can start delivering.
Finally, you need to complete a W-9 form and enter your bank account details.
DoorDash Costs to Consider
As a Dasher, you will need to pay for your business expenses. This includes your car insurance, gas, vehicle wear and tear, phone data and self employment tax.
When tax time arrives, you will need to accurately report your income and expenses. So, it is crucial that you keep track of your expenses, or you may overpay on your tax bill.
You can track your expenses manually or use an app such as Everlance.
You’ll only pay taxes on your net income. DoorDash sends out 1099-MISC reports, but you’ll need to self report expenses such as mileage using a Schedule C.
How to Earn More with DoorDash?
DoorDash can provide a decent side gig, but you can boost your earnings with some tips.
Tip 1: Only accept larger orders:
DoorDash does rank acceptance rates, but you can pick and choose your orders. Aim to accept the largest available orders. Customers tip on a percentage, so the biggest orders will also net the biggest tips.
Tip 2: Avoid the high traffic areas:
Traffic not only slows you down, but it also makes parking extremely difficult. Try avoiding orders from the high traffic areas where there is a risk you’ll end up paying for parking just to deliver the order.
Tip 3: Work during peak periods:
There is no point in scheduling to work when nobody is ordering. Aim to work only during the peak periods at lunch 11am to 1pm and dinner time from 4.30pm until 9pm.
Tip 4: Sign up for multiple apps:
While DoorDash is a great platform, there will be lulls in activity. So, to maximize your productivity, sign up for multiple apps, such as Instacart and Shipt. This will ensure that you stay busy during your work hours and make the most possible.
DoorDash Pros & Cons
- Flexible Schedule: You can schedule working shifts or work as and when you’re available
- Keep Your Tips: DoorDash allows you to keep 100% of your customer tips
- Maximize Earnings: The company offers hotspot and Peak Pay bonuses to maximize your earnings.
- Choose Orders: You have the freedom to pick and choose which orders you want to accept.
- Immediate Work Only Available at Peak Times: The Dash Now option is only available when it is busy and there are not enough dashers scheduled to cover the deliveries.
- No Hourly Pay: Since there is no fixed hourly pay, you may spend time waiting for an order and you won’t get paid for this time.
- Delay to Start: You’ll need to wait to pass your background check before you can get started. Although this may only take an hour or two usually, at peak periods, you may wait several days.
DoorDash vs Amazon Fresh
Like DoorDash, you need to pass a background check to work for Amazon Fresh and Amazon Flex. This means you could be delivering meals, groceries or gifts.
The platform operates throughout the US. But, only hires drivers according to the needs in a specific area.
The delivery schedules are arranged in blocks. These are typically three to six hours long. You can claim shifts on the app or pick up shifts on short notice through the “Check Available Blocks” feature.
You can expect to earn $18 to $25 per hour.
DoorDash vs Instacart
Instacart is a shopping app, where customers can place a grocery order to be picked and delivered by a full service shopper.
The pay varies according to:
- How many items in the order
- The driving distance
- Your location
- The time of the order
- The effort to shop and deliver the order
You will see an estimate of how much you’ll earn before you accept an order. Instacart full service shoppers have the potential to make up to $26 per hour. But, at slower times of the day, you’re more likely to earn $7 to $10 per hour.
The main difference between DoorDash and Instacart is that if you don’t have a vehicle, you can still find work. There is an option to be an in store shopper. These shoppers are paid a flat hourly rate of $9 to $16. Essentially, you’ll be shopping for customer orders to be delivered by someone else.
DoorDash vs Shipt
Shipt works with some of the largest retailers in the US. So you can earn $16 to $22 per hour delivering groceries or household items.
Shipt workers get paid per shop. So, the more that you shop, the more you’ll earn. The platform encourages Shoppers to tip drivers and you get to keep 100% of the tips.
This makes Shipt very similar to DoorDash. So, if you enjoy using DoorDash, it may be worthwhile also signing up for Shipt.
DoorDash vs Uber Eats
Uber is the leading name in ride sharing, but you can also earn cash by delivering food through Uber Eats.
Where DoorDash differs from Uber Eats is that it has a more complicated formula to calculate pay rates. You’ll get paid per delivery based on a pick up fee, mileage fee and drop off fee. However, you can see how much you could earn before you accept an order. Generally, you can expect to earn up to $20 per hour.
Additionally, you can keep 100% of the tips from your customers.
Is it Worth Working for DoorDash?
If you’re looking to make some extra cash, DoorDash is certainly a platform worthy of consideration. There is the potential to make up to $25 per hour. Furthermore, you can sign up for other delivery platforms to boost your earning potential.
With the massive food delivery industry and the industry growth, this is certainly a niche that can make a great side gig or even replace an income.
