While delivering takeaways may be the go to delivery job, you can actually make money delivering groceries.
In this Shipt review, I will help you to explore this platform to determine if it could be a great gig for you.
What is Shipt?
Shipt is owned by Target, it’s a grocery delivery service which customers can use to order groceries from companies, including: Target, HEB, CVS, Costco and others. A customer places their order, then a personal shopper in the area is notified and they carry out the shopping. As a Shipt shopper you claim the customers order, pick the items and then make the delivery to the customer.
Shipt is available as a shopping app for the Android and iOS platforms and freelance shoppers use the Shopper app. These apps are a free download and Shipt customers sign up the service as a customer with a monthly or annual membership fee.
|Google Play Store||4.2/5|
If you sign up with Shipt to work as a freelance shopper it’s easy to create a free account. At the moment, Shipt is available in over 5,000 cities in the lower 48 states. In reality, this means that there are not unlimited opportunities. If you’re not sure if your area is covered visit the Shipt website and enter your ZIP code to learn more.
How Shipt Works?
Shipt fulfills a need for grocery delivery to busy people that are working from home or parents simply overloaded with work. A customer can join with a $99 annual fee, then this gives them unlimited local grocery deliveries, It’s easy to create and store a weekly grocery list and this can be adjusted to add or delete items as needed.
The customer then submits their grocery list, a Shipt shopper claims it and then the customer waits for their delivery to arrive. At the time of writing this article the Covid-19 pandemic has increased the popularity of Shipt and other shopping services.
As a Shipt shopper, you place yourself on a shopping schedule for five days in advance when you want to work. Being on the schedule means that you are ready, willing and able to shop for customers in your area. You can work in a single zone within a few miles or across multiple zones if they don’t mind traveling.
When you are on the Shipt schedule, you will see the order appear and the Shopper app will help you to see the order size, the store and the delivery address. Shipt measures your acceptance rate carefully and if you reject too many customer orders in your area you may be removed from the program.
Once you accept a Shipt order, you simply go to the grocery store in question, shop for the items on the list and pay for them with the app. Then you deliver the grocery order to the customer and you may need to shop and deliver multiple orders at once. Shipt will pay you a commission for every successful delivery that you make.
You’ll receive commission and tips for every delivery you complete
How to Sign Up for Shipt?
Start by downloading the Shipt Shopper app for your preferred mobile device, then open the app and click on the “Apply Today” tab. If you prefer, you can visit the Shipt website and apply for a position online instead.
In both cases, you will need to provide:
- Your name,
- Email address
- The ZIP code where you reside.
- Your age,
- Postal address,
- Vehicle details
- Your shirt size (for the official Shipt shirt worn during deliveries).
Once Shipt has approved your application you will get a Shipt credit card and free shirt in the mail.
The Shipt application process requires some written responses to a number of questions about certain delivery scenarios. This will cover things that you may need to do in case a delivery is going to fail or you need a substitution. Some questions require a video response where you may have to describe yourself and three traits that will help you to provide a high standard of customer service.
The last part of the Shipt application is related to the Shipt Shopper Agreement, background check, a check consent form and your W9.
All of this paperwork can be completed within the app and once you’re finished up you’re ready to start work. Some Shipt shoppers reviews highlight spot opening up in around three days after their application with their credit card and shirt arriving six days later. So, you may be getting to work faster than you imagined.
Using the Shipt App
Once you’ve signed up, you can control your orders through the Shipt app. You can claim orders for delivery, fulfil them and deliver them.
After you’ve completed multiple shops you can start to claim more than one Shipt order at once. This improves the efficiency of you shopping and delivery tasks.
After you’ve completed a Shipt order delivery, you can mark it a “Delivered” within the app. At any time you can look at your delivering history to see specifically how much money you have made with Shipt.
Track your earnings through your delivery history
How Much Can You Earn with Shipt?
The primary method of earning money as a Shipt shopper is the commission for a successful delivery. The current commission rate is a flat $5 plus 7.5% of the total order amount. So, if you deliver a $100 order you earn $12.50 and an order of that size would probably take around an hour to complete including the traveling times. Now, that may seem like a terrible rate of pay, $12.50 per hour may seem like a joke to many people but there are other ways to improve that rate of pay.
The next way to earn money as a Shipt shopper is via tips for good service. This may seem trivial but tips are an important part of the home shopping and delivery experience. Many new Shipt shoppers are surprised at the generosity of Shipt customers that are busy dealing with family and other responsibilities. They appreciate the help and they are more than happy to tip diligent Shipt shoppers. This is especially true if you’re friendly, courteous and you don’t mind bringing the groceries into the home for them.
According to the majority of Shipt shoppers, tips can increase the hourly rate up to $15 or more. Additionally, if you can complete multiple shops in a fast enough time frame you can raise your hourly rate to $25 or more. Every time that you receive a tip from a customer you will receive a notification via the app which is always a nice feeling.
When you sign up with Shipt you need to provide the bank account details where you want to get paid. Shipt pays all of its shoppers on a weekly basis, this occurs on Friday and it covers the work that you carried out from the previous Monday up to and including Sunday. If one of your customers added a tip for a delivery after the Sunday cut off this will be added to your next payment. From January 2021, Shipt shoppers gained the option for an immediate cash out but at this time we don’t know if this involves any kind of processing fee.
Tips to Maximize Your Shipt Earnings
As can be seen, Shipt shoppers tend to make more money if they are efficient with their time. This is true of all gig economy type work, therefore the difference between success and failure can often hinge on some useful tips. Let’s take a look at seven handy tips that will help you to maximize your Shipt earnings:
Offer Outstanding Customer Service
As I’ve shown, tips are a large source of potential earnings and if you’re not making the most of this opportunity you could be leaving money on the table. Start by texting the customer when you reach the store, introduce yourself and ask them if they need anything adding to their order that they may have forgotten.
If they add something this will boost your commission anyway on the order value but it also demonstrates that you care about their shopping experience. If an item is not in stock you will need to carry out a substitution but you can involve the customer by sending them a picture of the substitute item(s).
When you arrive at the home for the delivery, greet the customer warmly and ask them if they want you to bring the groceries indoors and put them on the countertop for them. These little touches don’t take much time, but they are a great way to improve the number and value of the tips that you receive.
Don’t Neglect Smaller Orders
Even if a smaller Shipt order is only worth $6 in commissions it’s still worth doing and you shouldn’t ignore it. You can make many small shops in a short time, they can really add up and every shop is an opportunity to score a tip.
Always Work Mondays and Sundays
These two days are massive for Shipt and it makes good sense to make sure that you are available for work. This will maximize your potential to claim an order and earn yourself some extra cash. If you can process multiple orders at the same time take advantage of that and you will find that Mondays and Sundays are when you earn the most money with Shipt.
Use Shipt Alongside Other Side Gigs
Shipt is a flexible way to make money and if you’re an organized person it can work well alongside other side gigs. If you’re already driving with Uber or Lyft or you’re delivering food with UberEats or DoorDash you can fit in a Shipt delivery or two at the same time. If you’re good with analytics you can even evaluate where you make the most money at any hour of the day and place more focus there.
Track Those Miles
Working as a freelance Shipt shopper can rack up the miles even in a densely occupied area. Therefore, you need to keep track of what you’re spending on fuel to reduce your taxable earnings. One of the best ways to track your mileage and other expenses is the Everlance app.
Get a Car Charger
When you’re spending a lot of time driving and you rely on your smartphone for work you cannot afford to lose money due to a flat battery. Using a host of apps to run side gigs will decimate your battery life and you need a car charger for your phone.
Check the Bounties
Even if you’re not working on the Shipt schedule it’s worth checking the app from time to time. Occasionally, an order isn’t claimed because there is no-one available and Shipt offers a “Bounty” on those types of orders. As the delivery time draws closer, the bounty increases in value and this can add up to extra cash if you have the time to claim that order.
Shipt Pros & Cons
- User-friendly Home Shopping: The Shipt shopping app is easy to use, you can scan and find your customers products and even keep them updated as you shop. This makes substitutions simple, the customer will be happier and you’re more likely to earn that tip
- Great Tipping Policy: Unlike some gig economy jobs, Shipt allows shoppers to keep 100% of the tips that they earn for great customer service. This is a real incentive for shoppers to go that extra mile for their customers.
- Flexible Working: Shipt allows its shoppers to work when they please and the areas that they would like to cover.
- Transparent Orders: Shipt allows the shopper to see all the details of an order before they choose to accept it. This makes it easier to organize multiple shopping trips efficiently to match the size of your delivery vehicle.
- Potential to increase your hourly rate by combining orders.
- Shipt Order Availability: If you work in a quieter area you may not have an order to fulfill every day.
- Variance in Tips: The variance in tips can make the hourly rate anywhere from $10 up to $25 or more. This can make it difficult to budget and work out how much you’re earning per hour.
- Payment Delays: If you’ve worked Monday through to Sunday, you won’t get paid until the next Friday. This can mean that you can wait almost two weeks to get paid on an order after you completed it successfully.
- No Guaranteed Hours: While you may be prepared to work, there are no guarantees that there will be orders available to deliver.
- You Will Need to Track Your Expenses: While it may not seem like much, you’ll need to track your vehicle costs, phone data and other expenses to ensure working for Shipt is worth your while.
