Creating Online Courses with Teachable

Step 1 – Set Up a School

Before you start creating your course, you need to set up a school. Just like an actual school, you can offer unlimited yet separate courses to your students.

Your school’s required to have the following:

  • Homepage or landing page – must include the school name and description and outline your respective courses.
  • Terms of use/privacy policy – Teachable provides the template.
  • Course directory – showcases your currently offered courses and their descriptions.

Step 2 – Create a Course Within Your School

As soon as you set up your school, you’ll be prompted to create your first course. At this point, you’ll be required to fill out some basic information about your course, such as its name and description.

Step 3 – Create a Landing Page for Your Course

Once you’ve entered some basic information about your course and before you proceed to finalizing it, you’ll be required to create a landing page.

This is the page your prospects will see and impact them whether to enroll in your online course or not. That’s why it’s important to optimize your landing page for search engines and make the best first impression on your leads.

Step 4 – Create Modules for Your Course

Courses are organized as sections filled with lectures. So the next step to creating your  course is to set up the modules. You can name your sections as you set them up – e.g. Introduction, First Module, etc.

Step 5 – Upload Lesson Materials for Each Module

After you’ve created your course outline and modules, it’s time to upload lesson materials to each module.

Lectures can consist of:

  • Multimedia files (video, audio, PDF, etc.)
  • Text that you type directly into Teachable
  • Quizzes you create within Teachable

Step 6 – Publish Your Course

You’ve already created your school, set up your landing page, created modules and uploaded study materials for each section. What else is left? It’s time to publish your course.

Once you publish your course, you’ll be given a link that you can share and include in your advertisements.

Teachable Features

There are a few features Teachable offers you to help you maximize your school’s success.

Teachable Quizzes

You can create multiple choice quizzes to include in your online course which can be graded or not.

Quiz feature is flexible and allows you to indicate as many answer options as you’d like and questions can have one or multiple correct answers as well.

Completion Certificates

If you want to award your students with course completion certificates, Teachable has good capabilities for creating them easily.

To create a certificate, you can choose your design from any of the 3 templates Teachable provides or you can create a completely custom template using HTML or the Liquid coding language.

If you choose a template, Teachable will automatically insert your school name, name of your course and student’s name. You’ll be able to insert your logo, change the pre-set text and colors and add your signature.

Marketing & Selling Teachable Courses

Teachable integrates some marketing and sales features into their platform so you can set up your school for success.

Marketing tools Teachable offers:

  • Sales page – you can customize your course’s sales page so it converts more people.
  • Pricing – you can set multiple prices for your course or offer different pricing plans including free, subscription, one-time purchase or recurring payments.
  • Bundling – allows you to bundle multiple courses and sell them together.
  • Coupons – allows you to create discount codes that you can offer to select students.

Teachable Integrations

Teachable lets you integrate your favorite web applications and softwares on your school website using Zapier.

For example, you can connect Google docs or the email marketing software you’re currently using.

Managing & Communicating with Students

As soon as the student signs up for your course, you’ll get their full name and email address to communicate with them.

Apart from emailing, students can also leave comments on your lectures. You can use this section to clarify students’ comments.

Tracking & Reporting

Teachable tracks and reports student enrollments, progresses and quiz scores.

Additionally, Teachable also provides video heatmaps, that show which parts of your video have been watched (green), rewatched (yellow), rewatched multiple times (orange) or skipped (white).

Note that tracking and reporting isn’t available on the basic plan.

Teachable Pros & Cons

  • One-stop-shop platform helping you create, market and sell your online courses.
  • Website customization opportunity – you have your custom domain and can choose your website template that matches your course look and feel.
  • You can offer different payment options.

  • High fees – 5% transaction fee for basic account and a payment processing fee of 2.9% +30¢ to 4.4% +30¢, depending on the payment method.
  • You’re required to offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.
  • The company handles VAT taxes, but they don’t calculate U.S. state sales tax.

Teachable Alternatives

Teachable vs Udemy

Udemy Summary

  • Wide target audience of learners
  • Earn passive income from your courses
  • Get your payments within 1 to 2 days
  • Short minimum course duration (30 min)

Udemy is the most popular alternative to Teachable. However, you control how your course is sold and you own your website. Udemy on the other hand has your course listed on their website and often bundles and sells it along with other courses at a discounted price. Compared to Udemy, Teachable offers more advanced tools to create your course and you’re free to change the look and feel of your course website.

Teachable vs LearnDash

Learndash and Teachable have very different software philosophies and are meant for different uses. We’ve seen that Teachable is a one-stop-shop when it comes to building and selling your online courses. On the other hand, LearnDash is a learning management plug-in for WordPress, that allows you to build courses on your WordPress website.

Teachable vs Thinkific

Thinkific is a great alternative to Teachable. And while the two platforms offer very similar features, Teachable provides better marketing features while Thinkific offers better and more flexible site design.

Is it Worth Creating Your Online Course on Teachable?

While creating your school on Teachable looks easy, your success mainly depends on how you market it and your sales volume.

Unless you have a solid digital marketing knowledge or have an established and engaged followers’ base, selling your online courses through Teachable might be an extremely challenging experience.
